The tech world has recently focused on artificial intelligence – first and foremost ChatGPT. Microsoft funded the developer, OpenAI who made it available to the public. The chatbot AI system became a sensation within months of its release in November 2022.
ChatGPT works through conversations and can respond, identify errors, ask clarifying questions, and identify relevant requests. Several applications have already been developed to create content based on its API.
In response to the attention ChatGPT has garnered, Google’s parent company Alphabet, Inc. has announced the development and availability of its own conversational AI solution – Pea.
Bard, like ChatGPT, is powered by a neural network to execute its conversational interface. Google refers to this as the Language Model for Dialog Applications (LaMDA). It is a series of algorithms used to determine relationships in a data set. In layman’s terms, it is a model that simulates how the human brain works.
At this time, Bard will only be available for testing to a limited audience. Google has long made AI part of its search engine to help find information relevant to users’ queries.
Google products already use AI solutions
Its search engine has already been improved in several different ways. This includes improving search using images and using auto-updating maps in Google Maps. There is also great progress in the preservation of languages and cultures.
The implementation of Google Lens in the Google app on mobile devices uses AI to help you find relevant results based on the image you select.
Here, the Google search engine can search for specific libraries. For example, if you are looking at a plant, it will analyze the image to look for characteristics of the plant to help you identify it.
It also works to identify text in an image and provide translations. Google Lens isolates the text in the image and provides translation when needed. In the example below, you can see the translation overlaid on the right image.
Cohere uses Google Cloud to accelerate the learning of language models in chatbots, content moderation and categorization. Their efforts have led to advances in training effectiveness.
C3 uses AI through Google to improve supply chain capabilities, manufacturing, optimization and predictive maintenance. Their use of Google products includes Google Cloud, Google Manufacturing Data Engine, Vertex AI and Cortex Framework.
Anthropic primarily focuses on research that can lead to reliable, interpretable and manageable AI systems. Their efforts include research on the use of artificial intelligence in natural language, reinforcement learning, and code generation.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is nearing its public release, but Google is already continuing its own efforts to add artificial intelligence to its products and partnerships with other contributors. This competition is a good sign that the industry is in good health and many projects are under development.
The future of artificial intelligence may have computers creating content on their own, but the help of humans is still needed to add value to the final product. Despite today’s advances, artificial intelligence still has a long way to go before it is fully integrated into our daily lives.
